Welcome

The Philadelphia Donegal Association

We are a Beneficial, Social, Charitable, Patriotic and Cultural Organization
The Philadelphia Donegal Association is an Irish-American cultural organization founded in Philadelphia in 1888. It traces its roots back to County Donegal, Ireland. Actually, there exists several associations around the world; New York-USA, Coventry-United Kingdom, New South Wales, Australia and Dublin, Ireland.

The group evolved from a need in the late 1800's to take care of immigrants who were in need of aid and comfort. The vast influx of immigrants during those years prompted a growth of various Irish social societies in the United States. The first formal meeting of this association was held on September 18, 1888 at the Lewars Hall, Ninth & Spring Garden Street. Officers were elected and plans were made for the first concert and Ball which raised $1500 and was sent to Father James McFadden of Gweedore for relief of suffering among his parishioners. Today the Donegal Society continues to exhibit the spirit of a beneficial, social, charitable, cultural and patriotic association. The annual Donegal Ball held on the last Saturday in November remains the highlight of its social activities. Its charitable activities include annual sponsorship of a summer trip to America for children from Northern Ireland. The Society also actively participates in Cultural events such as the St. Patrick's Day Parade and we conduct the annual "Mary from Dungloe" pageant.

The Irish Center/Commodore Barry Club is located at Emlen St. & Carpenter Lane in Philadelphia. For further information about the Irish Center, call the Irish Center at 215-843-8051 or visit their website at: The Irish Center
